The Cenozoic evolution of the Intrarif (Rif, Morocco)

Abstract This paper provides an understanding of the sedimentary-tectonic evolution Cenozoic strata El Habt and Ouezzane Tectonic Units (Intrarif, External Rif) in Morocco. New data provide information about depositional architecture enable a correlation Rif Morocco with that Betic Cordillera Spain Tunisian Tell, which new insights for hydrocarbon exploration region regarding possible source, reservoir, seal rocks. The reconstructed succession was bio-chronologically defined, major unconformities stratigraphic gaps were identified. presence these allowed three main sequences to be defined by age: Danian p.p., early Ypresian–early Bartonian Rupelian–early Serravallian p.p. Three secondary former upper sequence also Rupelian–late Chattian Burdigalianp.p., Langhian–Serravallian setting evolved from deep basin during Late Cretaceous–Paleocene external platform-slope Eocene–Miocene. sandstones contain metamorphic sedimentary rock fragments derived recycled orogen source area. clay mineralogy consists associations Ill+(I–S) ± Sme, Sme+Kln Sme+Kln+Chl. These indicate initial unroofing Paleogene period, then Cretaceous finally Jurassic period Eocene–Oligocene. detritus followed variable amounts mix terrains due several phases erosion deposition partly related syn-sedimentary tectonics Miocene. Equivalent features (similar types sediments, tectofacies, gaps, unroofing) recognized along Maghrebian Chain (Morocco Tunisia) interpreted as pre-nappe tectonic activity soft basement folding, occurred after generalized inversion (from extension compression) Cretaceous. Upper is considered rock, while fractured Eocene porous Oligo-Miocene suites are proposed reservoirs. nappe structure could necessary trap structures.
